Regularly indulging in sugary beverages like soda, sweet teas, and fruit juice laden with added sugars could significantly heighten the risk of developing oral cavity cancer, as per a recent study. The analysis, detailed in a March 2025 publication of JAMA Otolaryngology–Head & Neck Surgery, sheds light on the connection between sugar-laden drinks and a greater likelihood of cancer. The study, rooted in data from the Nurses’ Health Study and Nurses’ Health Study II, followed over 160,000 women, monitoring their beverage habits and health outcomes over a significant period.
According to the findings, individuals who partook in at least one sugar-sweetened drink daily were almost five times more likely to be diagnosed with oral cavity cancer. Impressively, this risk spiked even higher for participants who also smoked or had minimal alcohol consumption. The researchers also identified a notable rise in oral cavity cancer cases in non-smoking women, prompting a deeper examination of potential contributing factors.
The study’s scope encompassed caffeinated and non-caffeinated sugar-filled sodas, non-cola carbonated beverages, and sweetened non-carbonated drinks like lemonade and sweet tea. Notably, the researchers highlight that while the baseline risk of oral cavity cancer is low, continued research is essential for a more comprehensive comprehension of the topic.
