Breaking Barriers in Hancock County Courtrooms: How Translator Technology is Bridging the Language Gap

In Carthage, Illinois, a groundbreaking technology has been introduced in the Hancock County courtrooms since last autumn. Known as Pocketalk, this translator device offers a wide array of over 80 languages to assist in effective communication.

Judge Rodney Clark of the 9th Judicial Circuit recently presided over a wedding ceremony where only these translators were used. He expressed his amazement at how the conversations were seamlessly translated, bringing joy to the individuals involved as they realized the newfound ability to communicate effectively.

Within the Hancock County Courthouse, there are a total of 14 Pocketalk devices, with four designated for each courtroom. Judge Clark mentioned that these devices are regularly utilized in hearings leading up to the trial phase. When it comes to trials, a live human interpreter is required for accurate translation.

The innovative technology is being embraced beyond court proceedings, with reports of other departments, including the Circuit Clerk’s office, incorporating Pocketalk for various communications. Previously, staff would resort to using Google Translate on their phones, a method that is not always efficient or secure.

According to Circuit Clerk Keara Weber, Spanish is the most commonly translated language using Pocketalk, although instances such as communicating with a Hindi-speaking individual at the Hancock County Sheriff’s Office have also been successful.

All conversations facilitated by Pocketalk are conveniently stored on an accessible dashboard, ensuring that vital information is retained for reference purposes. This advancement in communication technology has undoubtedly streamlined processes within the court system and other administrative offices, enhancing accessibility for all individuals involved.
