Expert psychology strategies for managing stress associated with measles outbreak

“Effective Psychology Tips for Handling Measles Stress”

Learn how to manage stress about measles with tips from mental health experts during the ongoing outbreak in Texas, including self-care and seeking support.

In Texas, the increase in measles cases has prompted a surge in public anxiety. Constant news updates, social media conversations, and health authority warnings can stir up stress and worry, especially among parents with young children.

One Dallas resident, Hope Howard, expressed her concerns about the rising measles cases, stating that she never thought measles would be a current issue but now finds herself worrying about it.

Eric Wood, the director of counseling and mental health at Texas Christian University, explains that stress and anxiety are natural responses to threatening situations. However, when these emotions are fueled by uncertainties about health, they can become overwhelming. Wood notes that anxiety related to health or illness can be more intense than anxiety related to work or relationships.

The impact of spreading diseases on mental health is evident from the COVID-19 pandemic. A scientific briefing from the World Health Organization in 2022 revealed a 25% increase in global anxiety and depression rates during the first year of the pandemic. A study from Boston College in 2021 also highlighted a significant rise in anxiety and depression among adult Americans, with the most affected group being adults aged 18 to 29.

Shaun Richardson, a licensed professional counselor in Irving, emphasizes that the anxiety surrounding measles stems from a fear of uncertainty and lack of control, which are common triggers for anxiety. Physical symptoms of anxiety can manifest as excessive sweating, feeling unwell, or experiencing insomnia. Difficulty breathing or muscle tension can also indicate heightened anxiety levels.

Rumination, or constantly dwelling on negative thoughts, is another common symptom of anxiety that can severely impact an individual’s well-being. Wood explains that excessive rumination, where the majority of one’s thoughts are consumed by anxiety, is maladaptive.

To manage anxiety during the ongoing measles outbreak in Texas, there are several proactive steps individuals can take:

  • Know your vaccination status: Being aware of your vaccination status and getting vaccinated can provide assurance and protection against the virus. The measles, mumps, and rubella vaccine offers over 95% effectiveness in preventing measles infection.

  • Practice self-care: Investing in regular self-care activities and connecting with loved ones can help alleviate anxiety. Engaging in activities that bring joy and relaxation can provide a necessary break from anxiety.

  • Get involved in public health efforts: Participating in public health initiatives can instill a sense of purpose and empowerment, counteracting feelings of hopelessness often associated with anxiety. Volunteering with organizations can also shift perspectives and alleviate worries.

If despite these efforts, anxiety becomes severe, seeking mental health support is essential. Therapists and mental health specialists can assist individuals in developing coping strategies tailored to their specific anxiety triggers. Understanding what one can and cannot control, especially in the face of uncertainty like disease outbreaks, is crucial for managing anxiety and finding peace of mind.
