‘The longer I left it, the more it was going to freak me out’: how Will returned to the water after a close call with a shark

Overcoming Fear: Will’s Journey Back to the Water After Shark Encounter

Surfer Will Salter recalls the intense moment he locked eyes with a 4-meter great white shark off a reef break in Victoria in 2010. How did he cope with the traumatic encounter, and what tools can help process such stressful events? Read more.

In a serene afternoon back in April 2010, Will Salter gazed at a reef break on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula at precisely 5pm. The remnants of a whale carcass lingered in the air as seagulls circled above. Paddling towards fellow surfers, Salter encountered a surreal sight – a massive four-meter great white shark gliding under his board, lured by the scent of the whale but unable to feast on it.

Locking eyes with the shark, Salter’s heart raced as he warned the other surfers and desperately paddled back towards shore. Despite the looming shark fins in the distance, he narrowly escaped a potential encounter. The traumatic experience left him shaken but grateful, prompting him to reflect on the fragility of life and the unpredictability of such encounters.

Salter’s story serves as a reminder of the resilience required to navigate life’s challenges. Emma Vaughan, a clinical psychologist, elaborates on the differences between acute stress and PTSD, emphasizing the importance of seeking professional help in processing such events. Vaughan’s approach involves building rapport, establishing a safe space, and addressing the client’s coping mechanisms and changed perspectives.

Drawing on personal experiences of trauma, former professional footballer Ben Hamlett sheds light on the power of mindfulness and meditation in overcoming setbacks. Hamlett’s journey from debilitating concussions to psychological growth underscores the importance of resilience and adaptability in the face of adversity.

For Salter and Hamlett, confronting their fears and embracing mindfulness were pivotal in their recovery journeys. Whether it’s navigating shark-infested waters or battling career-ending injuries, their stories highlight the transformative power of resilience and self-discovery. In the end, it’s not just about getting back on the horse – it’s about rewriting the narrative and finding strength in vulnerability.
