Apple is currently working on developing the next iteration of its Studio Display, with reports indicating that the tech giant is exploring various prototypes for this new model. The original Studio Display was released nearly three years ago, making it high time for a successor to hit the market. According to a well-respected journalist, Apple has two prototypes in the works, with the possibility of choosing between them for the final product or offering customers different options in terms of screen size and specifications.
In a recent edition of the Power On newsletter, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman shared insights into Apple’s plans to introduce a new external monitor for Mac users, possibly to replace the current Studio Display. While initial reports pointed towards a model referred to as J427, Gurman revealed the existence of another prototype labeled J527. It seems that J527 may not necessarily be the direct follow-up to J427, but rather an alternative version with minor differences.
Apple is considering two paths forward: selecting one of the prototypes as the final product or releasing both versions with variations in screen size and specifications. This move would provide customers with more choices when selecting a monitor for their desktop computers, including the Mac mini, Mac Pro, and Mac Studio.
The current Studio Display, launched in 2022, features a 27-inch 5K Retina display with 600 nits peak brightness. The upcoming monitor could potentially replace the Apple Pro Display XDR, which was introduced six years ago to complement the Mac Pro (2019). The timeline for the release of the second generation Studio Display is expected to be either by the end of this year or in 2026, aligning with earlier leaks that hinted at a 2026 launch window.
