How we are pioneering artificial intelligence applications in public health  – UK Health Security Agency

Revolutionizing Public Health with Artificial Intelligence: UK’s Groundbreaking Initiatives

Harnessing AI technology to address health security challenges, the UK Health Security Agency showcases projects using artificial intelligence to improve public health.

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) is utilizing cutting-edge artificial intelligence (AI) technology to tackle health security issues. Here are three examples of projects showcasing how AI is being employed to safeguard and enhance public health.

One innovative project involves utilizing Large Language Models (LLMs) to swiftly understand patients’ experiences. By analyzing data from the Positive Voices 2022 survey regarding the U=U (Undetectable = Untransmissible) concept, AI successfully identified key themes from over 1,600 responses. While human validation is still in progress, the use of AI has the potential to significantly expedite qualitative analysis in public health research.

Furthermore, AI is being leveraged to detect outbreaks of food-borne illnesses. By evaluating multiple LLMs’ ability to analyze online reviews for terms related to gastrointestinal symptoms and specific food types, UKHSA’s comprehensive study aims to identify illness outbreaks that traditional surveillance methods may overlook. Challenges related to data access and quality must be addressed for widespread implementation.

In another project, AI is being used to ensure consistency in public health guidance during emergencies. By employing secure LLMs on UKHSA’s computing clusters, potential conflicts between guidance recommendations can be automatically detected, saving time and ensuring clarity in messaging during health crises.

Looking forward, the possibilities of AI in public health provision are vast. Dr. Nick Watkins, Deputy Director Data Science & Geospatial and Chief Data Scientist at UKHSA, emphasizes the importance of striking a balance between innovation and validation to harness AI’s potential effectively while upholding stringent standards expected from a national public health agency.

Overall, AI is proving to be a valuable tool in enhancing public health protection and research. As AI technology continues to evolve, the synergy between human expertise and AI capabilities holds great promise for the future of public health.
